4.1 Venture philanthropy – The concept
Venture philanthropy is a long-term approach by which an investor supports an organisation with a social
purpose and helps like this to contribute to increase its social impact (EVPA, 2019).

Historical development
Venture philanthropy (VP) started to develop in the US in 1990. In 2002, it started to become popular in the
UK from 2002 and in 2006 it started to develop into continental Europe. However, the term was coined in
1969 by an American philanthropist called John D Rockefeller III.
